Motivations and Goal-Directed Autonomy

چکیده
As we move towards a richer model of computation based on interactions among autonomous agents in lieu of the more traditional numeric batch processing model, it is necessary to devise techniques and abstractions for the development of such autonomous agents. The ability to generate, reason about, and select the means to achieve explicit goals is critical for autonomous agents, the so called goal-driven autonomy. Reasoning about goals demands a suitable abstraction for meta-level reasoning, so that an agent not only reasons about the actions it needs to take, but also about the viability of (and interaction among) such goals. In this paper we discuss the use of motivations as an abstraction of metareasoning for goal-driven autonomous agents. We review recent developments in motivated agent architectures and discuss possible directions for future research.

Does autonomy increase with age? Comparing the goal motivations of college students and their parents
We found that parents of college students report greater goal-autonomy than their children, consistent with organismic, humanistic, and trait perspectives upon positive aging. Parents also had higher levels of positive aVect and lower levels of negative aVect than their children. In a second, retrospective test of the age-to-autonomy relationship, parents reported more autonomy now compared to ...
متن کاملMotivations for MADbot: a Motivated And Goal Directed Robot
This paper presents the MADbot architecture which enables a motivated autonomous agent to generate goals in response to changes in its underlying drives or motivations, while it is both planning and executing. We use a Mars rover domain to illustrate the workings of this architecture and describe two ways of modelling motivations and goal generation: the first decouples the model of motivations...
متن کاملA Cognitive Model of Situated Autonomy
We introduce situated autonomy and present it as part of the process of action selection. We then discuss the cognitive ingredients of situated autonomy and derive a degree of situated autonomy. 1 Situated Autonomy and Action Selection Autonomous agents have been defined to be agents with self-generated goals using the agent’s motivations [4]. Such agents perform action selection, which is the ...
متن کاملApplying Appraisal Theories to Goal Directed Autonomy
Appraisal theories (Roseman and Smith, 2001) are psychological theories exploring how humans evaluate situations along a number of appraisal dimensions, many of which compare the situation to the current goals. We report on the application of appraisal theories to focus the learning of policies in complex domains via Soar 9’s built-in reinforcement learning mechanism. In addition, we describe h...

The identification of the cognitive, affective, social and even physiological factors affecting second or foreign language learning routes and rate has for long been a challenging aspiration for second language researchers. However, a recent preoccupation of the researchers in this area has been the study of the combinatorial impacts of such factors on second or foreign language learning proces...
